
Geoffrey Mrema
Geoffrey Mrema is a Tanzanian currently working as
Professor of Agricultural Engineering at the Sokoine University of
Agriculture in Morogoro, Tanzania. He retired from the FAO in April 2011
where he had been working as the Director of the Rural Infrastructure
and Agro-industries Division at its headquarters in Rome Italy from
2001-2011 with two years [2005-06] serving as the FAO Representative in
Eastern and Southern Africa based in Harare, Zimbabwe. Prior to joining
FAO in 2001 he had served as the first Executive Secretary of ASARECA
[1995-2001]; Inaugural Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture at the
University of Botswana [1987-95]; Associate and Head of Department of
Agricultural Engineering at the University of Dar es Salaam and the
Sokoine University of Agriculture [1973-87] where he started his
professional career in 1973. He has served as a short Term consultant
for different international agencies as well as on Boards of Trustees of
ISNAR and IITA. He co-chaired the Expert Panel which developed Science
Agenda for Agriculture in Africa which was approved by the Malabo AU
Summit in July 2014. He was lead author of a report on Sustainable
Agricultural Mechanization Strategies for the Asuia Pacific Region
approved by a high level expert panel convened by FAO and CSAM in
Bangkok, Thailand in June 2014. Professionally he is a
mechanical/agricultural engineer with BSc/MSc/PhD qualifications.
