Dr. W. Trent Bunderson

Dr. Bunderson is the Executive Director and Co-Founder of Total LandCare established in 1999 as a non-governmental registered with operations in Malawi, Tanzania, Mozambique and Zambia. Its mission is to transform the livelihoods of rural communities from subsistence to profitable enterprises with sound management of their natural resources. From 1980 to 2011, Dr. Bunderson was Associate Professor at Washington State University, and served as WSU’s East & Southern Africa Representative for its International Research and Development Program. He has been instrumental in securing over $100 million in grants and contracts to implement development projects involving over 300,000 smallholder households in agriculture, forestry and conservation in Malawi and neighboring countries. With 38 years of development experience in Africa, Dr Bunderson has worked in many diverse areas including: 1) community based extension and adaptive research to promote sustainable agriculture focusing on climate smart agriculture, diversification and low-cost irrigation; 2) natural resource management with emphasis on forestry, natural regeneration and agroforestry; and 3) improved conservation and biodiversity of protected areas with communities through interventions that generate economic, social and environmental benefits from their participation. In Sudan, Dr Bunderson served as senior range/livestock ecologist from 1980-1985 on the Western Sudan Agricultural Research Project. In Kenya where he was raised, he conducted research on the competing and synergistic relationships between wildlife, agriculture and pastoral livestock. Overall, his efforts have contributed to increased productivity of crop and livestock systems; enhanced agricultural support services and policies; and improved conservation and biodiversity with reduced environmental degradation.
