Field Trips


Field Site1: Manjoh Ranch

Nigel Town, Gauteng Province

Manjoh Ranch is a mixed farming operation on a total of 5500 Ha comprising of 2800 Ha arable crop land of 790 Ha are irrigated and 2010 Ha dryland, 1000 ha planted pastures and Approx 1700 Natural pastures. The main activity on the farm is cattle feedlotting, where approximately 30000 beef animals are grown and prepared for slaughter. Manjoh Ranch plant approximately 1400 hectares of soybeans as a cash crop and 1400 hectares of maize. They also run a Beefmaster stud herd of approximately 1600 breeding females and sell roughly 100 bulls to other breeders and cattleman and operate a 6 ton an hour maize, where maize meal is produced for human consumption and the by product ( Hominy chop is used in our feedlot as a feed source). The farm also produces approximately 12 000 ton of manure which is then recycled into our fields as a nutrient source.

Field Site2: Holfontein Farm

Vanderbyl Park town, Gauteng Province

Holfontein farm operates a mixed farming system on a total of 740 ha, comprising of 400 arable and 335 natural grazing with 5ha residential. 300 ha of the farm has been utilized to cultivate different crops,i.e maize, sunflower and soya beans on rotational base system so that the soil must continuously retain and gain nitrogen.The farm has a feed lot with holding capacity of two hundred animals which graze comfortably on 40ha rotational planted pastures. (the Brazseed grass, highly nutritional). Holfontein farm supplies abattoirs with grass fed animals at 400 kg. Conservation agriculture, where soil disturbance, permanent soil cover combined with crop rotation integrated pasture management is co – practiced in order to achieve best results.

Field Site3: Kleinwater 301 JS

Witbank town, Mpumalanga Province

The Kleinwater 301 JS farm size is 1546.8761 ha of which natural grazing occupies 806 .8761 ha, planted pasture occupies 140 ha, arable land 532 ha and 68 ha is leased. White maize rotate with soya beans. Presently maize is planted on 332 ha soya 268 Ha (including leased arable lands). Under livestock production, the farm currently has 90 cattle which includes the Nguni progeny. The present stock is 30 cows, 16 heifers and 41 calves of which 27 are females and 14 are males.

Field Site4: 359 Brakspruit Farm

Leandra town, Mpumalanga Province

359 Brakspruit Farm is located 26030’06.205 S and 28059’57.749E near the Evander town in the Gert Sibande district under Govan Mbeki municipality in the Mpumalanga Province, South Africa. The farm is in a location that receives 565mm to 780mm of rainfall per year mostly is during summer and the minimum 16.50C with a maximum of 25.70C. The farm mainly deals with livestock but recently have introduced crops and it is a rain-fed farm with no irrigation system. Currently, the farm is having 440 cows and 150 sheep with the area of 100ha. Because of the late rain this year 2018 it has forced the farmer to plant twice and he planted soya and maize. This year he harvested 3.1 to 2.8tons of soya and for maize, it was 6.8 and 7 tons. The farm is planning to venture into sunflower plantation for the upcoming growing season.

Field Site5: Mpembe farming project

Balfour town, Mpumalanga Province

The Mpembe farming is located 26041’21.240 S and 28038’34.542 E. near the Leandra town in the Gart Sibande district under Dipaleseng municipality in the Mpumalanga Province, South Africa. The Mpembe farming is approximately 6.25km away from the then Balfour town. The farm operates on a 613ha land. Conservation agriculture (CA) is being practiced on the farm for the past 4years.

Field Site6: Freedom Farm

Settlers town, Limpopo Provimce

Freedom farm operates on a 62 ha land with 60 Ha utilized for natural grazing and 0.25 Ha used for planted pasture . The farm breeds locally adapted pigs form the ‘engine room’ for rapid land restoration. The farm embraces the enhancement of biodiversity increase (mass and quality), rehydration of the landscape, along with community and wildlife benefits.
